They only take exact change, and they charge a $2.50 "fee" if you use a card.

Unfortunately there is no 0 Stars. This office is completely inefficient. They lost my check, gave me the incorrect amount of my taxes. I had to go through the process 4 times because no one in the office knows their job. It was escalated to individuals that were supposed to be in charge and they still did not get it right. Unfortunately our tax dollars are being wasted.

Alabama has some serious problems. One being that they charge an ad valorem for vehicles that are not driven. They simply go back to the last provable tax payment, and make you pay everything in between. They make no consideration for what this means in real life to real people. For example, if you find yourself unemployed and decide to stop driving in order to save money, the taxes will simply build up year after year and it will be that much harder to register your car in the future. Additionally if you are bringing a car in that has not been registered from another state, you're obliged to pay AL for whatever years it was not registered. They also require insurance in order for a car to be registered, the aforementioned unemployed person being less and less likely to be able to keep a car "legal". They also charge a flat fee for electric cars. The idea is that driving an electric car does not pay the normally associated taxes on gas. Legitimate. However, this creates a problem when it comes to being able to mitigate your costs via your habits. Using The road less for a gas car means less gas and less taxes, more means more. For a person trying to do the right thing for the environment or their budget or simply not driving at all, there is still a steep price. Can you imagine having to pay an estimated amount of gas taxes even if you never bought gas?
Customer service: at first they were pleasant enough. I understand that employees are not responsible for the law, but if a state is going to have their employees say "I'm sorry, that's the law" they should supply their employees with a reference to said law. As I was trying to investigate the possibility of consideration for my real life circumstances and the validity of having to pay an exorbitant fee to register my car for the very first time in Alabama, the woman started arguing with me about the validity of charging electric vehicles a fee, which I was not arguing against. When I asked her to inform me of the law that she had referenced, she walked away and left me standing there for 45 minutes while she and another employee stared at a computer screen and her phone. When she finally came back, she looked like she wanted to eat me alive. I apologized and told her that I had no idea that she would not have the law at her immediate disposal. She gave me my items, did not inform me of what to expect with my title, and walked away. I get that it's a hard job, but if the state is going to fail to be understanding of exceptional circumstances and treat everyone like a criminal trying to cheat the system, or a cow to be milked, then probably the employees are going to have that attitude too.

I've called them multiple times, emailed multiple times, for weeks on end, and I cannot get them to respond - they're MIA. The information they have for me in their system is wrong, and I'm trying to get them to correct it. And they sent me a letter stating that I haven't paid my property tax for the year, when in fact I see that it's been deducted from escrow a while ago. Don't know what these folks are doing, but if I can ever get in contact with them, maybe we can sort it out.

I recently had my name changed and had to get my name changed on my car title pus renew my tags. There were a lot of hurdles to jump through to get this done, but Jeanetta at window 6 was so calm and understanding of my situation. She was so professional and helped me navigate the process.

What a friendly & helpful group of people! I am not a real estate guru by any means, not even a beginner, below beginner. Everybody in the office that I worked with was very patient with me and explained all of the steps that I needed to take. Thank you Miss Adriana (manager) it was a pleasure to speak with you about your office. 🌞

Maybe Google reviews don't mean much when it comes to public services, but here goes. I went to visit the tax assessor and to get my car tag renewed today. Efficient and professional. That is about all you can ask for when it comes to public services. I had multiple business matters to handle and was in and out in less than an hour. If you are reading this and work in tax assessment or the tag renewal office in downtown Birmingham, I appreciate y'all.
