The basic idea of Ten Thousand Villages is sound, but with one glaring and fatal flaw: this company does not give back to needy citizens in the very country that supports their stores...our own USA.

Think of the good that could be done by sharing their wealth and employing needy US artisans as well as with the poor of other countries. Why can't they do both? Supposedly charity should begin at home, but not with this business that supposedly operates as a not-for-profit organization.

There are so many areas of this country with pockets of dire poverty. Some of those people are talented and create beautiful and useful items out of necessity. They make what they cannot afford to buy. They have generations teaching generations how to make these things, and many of them are boutique or even museum quality.

To make matters worse, I have requested several times to be taken off the Ten Thousand Villages mailing list, to no avail. For a company that claims to be into conservation and operating on a shoestring, they don't mind wasting money for direct mail-out of catalogs/brochures and the postage it costs to mail them to people who simply throw them away.

Well-intentioned customers like to think they are helping poor people by shopping at this overpriced store and do not see through the hoopla and recognize the hypocrisy of the Ten Thousand Villages setup. It is shameful.
