Located right on Main St as you roll into town, this place is a MUST stop before committing to any activity. The Rangers are incredibly informative, friendly, and can give you valuable up to the minute information to help keep you safe and make wise decisions before you head out there! You can also obtain a permit right there in the lobby. That's if there's one available for your trail preference. If not, you're in the right place to discuss options.. as they're fantastic references for you here! You can easily spend over an hour here browsing, and you should, as you'll find such value for your time. Highly recommend, and they were so helpful.

Great place to buy souvenirs and nerd out on maps. As far as getting a wilderness camping permit, the people there are well versed in the area and can recommend great places to check out. Unfortunately, when I went they couldn't issue permits because their payment system was down. It's been down for weeks. If the government had competition, you know that they would have fixed the problem immediately. Instead the seven employees working for our government at the welcome center asked me to call a phone number of a third party that the government has vetted and employed to deal with permits. I spent 30 minutes calling to get a permit with no one answering the phone. Totally ridiculous!! So I highly recommend this place if you want to buy gifts and maps, but if you came for a wilderness permit you would be baffled by the government waste and inefficiency.

Awesome experience visiting Mammoth Lakes for the very first time. We went to the visitor center where the staff gave us recommendations on hiking paths and beautiful areas/ lakes to check out while on our stay. The staff was overly friendly and very knowledgeable of the area! Absolutely loved our time spent here in Mammoth! Such an amazing area to hike and poke around on an adventure!

Nice people in the visitor center and professional. Nice gift shop too. Mammoth lake is very beautiful area I highly recommend to visit that place and spend some time. The village is also nice you will find shops and restaurants. Prices are quite high but the area is wonderful. I highly recommend it. Take some time to walk around the forest and do some trails. Knowledgeable and mostly friendly staff. Fair selection of souvenirs and nature books. Not a very good selection of post cards especially cards specific to the area. Good maps for sale and free maps of the lakes with trails available also.
