Always fun, always interesting, and always friendly! There is plenty of merchandise for adults, children, adults who feel like old children, and everything from historic artifacts and materials for sale, art, books, clothing, and a lot of fun new MTA merchandise…all of the above with offerings for both adults and children! Whether you are a serious MTA or transit fan, looking for a more unique NYC souvenir which is far better than the stuff random souvenir shops sell, or whether you’re looking for a gift for a friend or a child, the Transit Museum gift shops have it all! Don’t forget to join the Transit Museum as a member for perks and special member opportunities! (Photos with this review from the annual Holiday Train Show at the GCT location)

I had a fantastic time at the Museum! It’s a wonderful place to learn about the history of the city’s transit system. The exhibits are well-curated, and I especially enjoyed the vintage trains. The gift shop is a treasure trove of unique items that you won’t find anywhere else. Overall, it’s a great place to visit if you’re interested in learning more about New York and its trains. I highly recommend it!

I really liked the store! They have a great selection of items, and I ended up buying a Lionel O-scale train, which I’m really happy with. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. I also loved the free layout they had on display—it was such a nice touch. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

I love visiting the New York Transit Museum. This location is at Grand Central Terminal at 89 East 42nd Street, New York, NY. This is the se one location that I visit. This time we only went in to buy a plate holder. However, the exhibition was awesome. We walked throughout the whole space which offers great subway memorabilia. The staff is friendly and helpful!

Recently visited the Museum's Holiday Display (2023).

Although you need to make reservations online at all times, entrance to the display is free before a certain date in mid-November and $5 per person after that date.

I visited on a Friday evening at around 6pm and it wasn't crowded.

The display itself was quite impressive with lots of fine details only true New Yorkers would notice and appreciate. There are a few running trains throughout the display.

There are lots of MTA-related items to purchase both in the display area and the main store area.

It is something nice to do in the area to kill a few minutes. Don't plan on spending longer than 5-10 minutes maximum there. Luckily there are lots of shops in Grand Central, including the Holiday Fair, and it is a major transportation hub...so lots of other reasons to be there.

I'm not sure the $5 admission fee is justified for what it actually is...maybe more like $2-3 would be more appropriate.

Great little spot to stock up on last-minute unique New York gifts. I wouldn’t really call this a museum or a gallery so much as just a gift shop. The collection there is great and the staff working are extremely helpful. 10/10 re commend for any kid gifts you might need.
