Bought a pair of Hoka running shoes 3 months ago. Wore them running on a treadmill for 30 minutes one time and 2 other times casually walking. It’s about an hours drive and so it’s taken me a bit to get down here to exchange them! REI wouldn’t take my exhange today because an 80 year old lady with inch thick glasses that hasnt ever spent a day outdoors in her life inspected the shoes and said “the soles are broken”. Surely Hokas aren’t THAT bad. Having spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $15-$20k at REI over the past decade or so, without ever returning an item once I’m here to ask: WHERE IS THIS AMAZING EXCHANGE PROGRAM PEOPLE TALK ABOUT?

I've been in three times over the last six weeks to try and buy shoes. You can't get service. I stand in the shoe dept for 20 mins. No one acknowledged me. $500 walked out the door forever today. I will be canceling my lifetime membership.

Dave, Joshua, Jess, & Danny helped me out a lot! I'm bikepacking along the Pacific Coast Trail. Had to get my bicycle maintenanced. Dave & Joshua replaced my casette & chain as well as inspected the bike & filled the tires.
Danny went out of his way to help me get some new clothes & didn't pressure me into buying anything. He made sure I got what I liked & answered all my questions patiently. Really satisfied with this REI staff. I signed up for a lifetime membership to REI as well!

I live in San Francisco and was looking for walking/hiking shows. I called REI in Corte Madera to check for availability. The salesperson I spoke to stated they had the shoes I wanted in stock. I told the salesman I would be there within an hour. A 40 minute drive and I was inside REI shoe department and the salesperson was not there. I told the salesperson why I was there. She checked the inventory and said they didn't have the shoes I wanted in stock. She called the manager and explained the situation to him and he did some looking with the same results "the shoes I wanted indeed not in stock'. Therefore I had a 40 minute drive back to San Francisco. I did not have the shoes I wanted and wasted over 2 hours of my day.

I'll never go to REI again, instead I'll go to Amazon where I should have gone in the first place.

This particular REI is located in a Mall and has tons of parking available. Fairly large in size and has pretty much anything outdoor related that one would need. Bags, bikes and miscellaneous camping/hiking gear is on the 1st floor and clothing and footwear is located on the 2nd floor. Staff was pleasant and helpful.

We feel lucky to have REI store in marin county. We buy a lot of things from this store from backpacking gears to a several bicycles over the years.
REI member since early 1990s.
We have been served by a couple of longtime shoes dept associates who know a lot about different orthopedic needs.
We still use many of camping gears from REI after over 15-year of ownership.

Update: 12/24 - staff still rude and unfriendly. I want to like REI, but the staff is miserable and ruined the shopping.

Not a fan of the staff in this store
